The Newport International Polo Series is a grand Rhode Island tradition that ranks as one of New England's top attractions. It is a Gilded Age legacy reincarnated to feature teams from the world's six continents playing against USA in polo matches every Saturday in June through September. With polo played in over 80 countries, participating teams have become a part of the annual roster over the past 20 years including Ireland, Spain, England, Argentina, France, Italy, and many more.
USA's squad has included two world champions, John Wigdahl and Charlie Bostwick, members of the only US team to win the World Championships (FIP 1989). The Newport International Polo Series is the only forum in the world dedicated primarily to international polo competition, and is also recognized as a community leader in civic and charitable contributions.
The Newport Polo Club is the successor to the first polo club in America, founded in Newport, RI 1876, and it remains registered with the United States Polo Association under the historic 'Westchester' name. Revitalized in the early '90's by Dan Keating, the club's grass polo season and public exhibition matches of the Newport International Polo Series take place in Newport County.
